Safeguarding
The Government is keen to bring together the various strands relating to the welfare and well being of children and young people. There is a duty on Governing Bodies to ensure there are suitable arrangements for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the pupils in their school.
This work is not to be done in isolation and the Guidance document (DfES/0027/2004) identifies the roles of a variety of agencies, including Local Education Authorities, but this summary is primarily for Governors.
The Education Act 2002 - Duty to Safeguard and Promote the Welfare of Children
Section 175 introduces a new statutory duty for Local Education Authorities and school governing bodies in relation to welfare of children.
1. A local education authority shall make arrangements for ensuring that the functions conferred on them in their capacity as a local education authority are exercised with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
2. The Governing body of a maintained school shall make arrangements for ensuring that their functions relating to the conduct of the school are exercised with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children who are pupils at the school.
